Week of May 17th - 24th

This week we caught a little bit of everything from tarpon in Key West harbor, to permit on the gulf side, to catching some more big dolphin and swordfish offshore, and also catching some mutton snapper on the reef continues to be good.

Week of May 9th - 16th

This week the mutton snappers were in spawning mode and eating very well. This week I had Clay Reeves from Miami FL.A very good repeat clients of mine and we caught many mutton snappers from 12lb. to 20lb. just like we do every time he comes down this time of year. Also on the agenda this week was dolphin. A lot of big dolphin are moving thru the keys right now and if you are lucky enough to get off shore you shouldn't have any problem finding them.

Week of April 12th - 18th

Sailfish, sailfish, and more sailfish! This week the sailfish were pouring through we were averaging 6 to 12 sailfish a day. The sailfish conditions were just about perfect, we had a beautiful color change for most of the week with good east bound current and when we had a little bit of wind the fish started tailing on the surface.

Also along this color change we also caught tailing cobia 20lb to 50lb., Dolphin, Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish, and a couple of hammerhead sharks. One day this week I took a break from sailfishing and went daytime swordfishing and made two drops and caught 2 swordfish one was 160lbs. and the other 80lbs. The second half of the day we went yellowtail fishing which was also very successful with a lot of big yellowtails from 3lb to monster 6 pounders! Also a couple of big muttons on the bottom along with one big black grouper that was 35lbs. Until next week tight lines and good fishing.

Triple J Fishing Charters is out fishing year round. Fishing is seasonal, many Key West's fish species visit Key West on their migrations. Here is a seasonal round-up, if your planning a fishing vacation and what you can expect at any given time of the year.

January - March
Offshore Fishing
Swordfish are good this time of year, the larger fish dwindle toward Febuary. Sailfish, wahoo, tuna, shark and kingfish are abundant throughout the season. Marlin start to show up in Febuary and can be found through most of the year. Dolphin (mahi mahi) start to show up towards the end of March and should be around till the fall.
Reef, Wreck and Bottom Fishing
The various species of grouper and snapper are year round residents of Key West, the Marquesas and the Dry Tortugas, as are the reef sharks and barracuda. Amberjack start to show up in March.
Flats,In shore Fishing
Much of winter is good cobia fishing. The barracuda and sharks are always around and up for a good fight. Permit will start showing their faces in March

April - June
Offshore Fishing
Swordfish fishing remains good till july and AugustSailfish are still here till the beginning of June. Marlin and wahoo fishing is still a strong bet. The dolphin mahi mahi) are really starting to show up in big numbers, fish will range anywhere from a couple of pounds to 30-40 pound bulls. Tuna and kingfish start their migration out of Key West in April. Shark fishing remains good.
Reef, Wreck and Bottom Fishing
Grouper and snapper fishing remains constant. Amberjack are good on the wrecks till June. Barracuda and shark fishing stays good throughout the year.
Flats,In shore Fishing
The tarpon (siver king) start making their migration south from Miami and take up residence in the channels and Key West harbor. PermitPermit, barracuda and shark are still a good option during the spring.

July - September
Offshore Fishing
Swordfish fishing slows down during July and August and starts to pick up again in September. Offshore fishing is smoking hot, with large schools of dolphin (mahi mahi) out on the weedlines and under birds. Marlin feed on smaller dolphin and can be found just about anywhere you find dolphin. Sailfish start to show up again in August in good numbers. Tuna make a breif appearance in July and August. Wahoo follow in August.
Reef, Wreck and Bottom Fishing
Grouper, snapper, barracuda and shark are the main-stays of the reefs and wrecks.
Flats,In shore Fishing
The tarpon fishing is great into September, and of course there are always the barracuda and sharks.

Offshore Fishing
Swordfish remains a good bet and the larger fish start showing up in Novemeber. Sailfish, fishng is great during the fall and into winter. Dolphin (mahi mahi) fishing slows down in October and the marlin start to disappear in November. As these fish leave Key West the wahoo and tuna fishing is great. The winter kingfish season is in full swing.
Reef, Wreck and Bottom Fishing
Grouper, snapper fishing is as good as always. There are always shark and barracuda to catch
Flats,In shore Fishing
Inshore fishing is slow but there are still barracuda and shark to hook up with.
